19 out of 100 were 5 stars. Exactly half were four or more and exactly three quarters were three or more. I swear I didn't plan it so neatly. All in all though, if you picked 100 movies at random, I almost certainly wouldn't rate half of them four or more stars, so there's obviously some merit to this list. Well done, AFI. You're better than random.

  2. Here's what Mandy of the Mandy/Ebert Project thought about all the movies you hated on this list:
Swing Time: "I really liked the movie."
The Searchers: "I unashamedly love today's movie... it's one of my favorite movies."
Yankee Doodle Dandy: "It's not really a bad movie, so much as it's just not my kind of movie."
City Lights: "The best sort of silent film."
Shane: "It's clearly a good movie, but it's just so not a movie for me, you know what I mean? So yes, some of this was my mood, but I also just really don't enjoy this style too much - but I would never say that it's a bad movie."
All About Eve: "I really liked this film a lot."
Vertigo: "I think it's a great movie to rent and check out. It's well-filmed and fun to watch, and I think everyone likes these sort of mystery/thriller stories."
The Wild Bunch: "I love The Wild Bunch."
Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs: "I just thought this was a nice little film."
Duck Soup: "I'm sure this is movie blasphemy, but I wasn't in love, or even really in like with this film."
The Best Years of Our Lives: "It was a great movie. I can't even get over how amazing it was. It had such a great story, and wasn't dated at all."
Double Indemnity: "I really like this movie, though, so I was happy to watch it again."
Easy Rider: "I still love it. I'm sick of talking about it, reading about it, and writing about it...not watching it. :)"
Singin' in the Rain: "I never thought I would say I enjoyed a musical like this, but I really did. It's so much fun!"
